Who truly controls the spaces we inhabit? How we perceive and experience the spaces we inhabit is central to our lived experiences and our understanding of the world around us. When spaces become contested—such as in the conflicts surrounding construction and development projects in Malta—they come to symbolise deeper ideological struggles and competing worldviews.
In this discussion, Andre Callus will examine how the dominant neoliberal ideology, driven by individual aspirations and hyper-consumption, seeks to shape spaces, restructuring social relations in its image to sustain its existence and reproduction. However, its hegemony is never absolute. It continually faces resistance from alternative social, political, and economic visions that challenge its dominance.
The Speaker:
Andre Callus become involved in social justice activism at the of age of 17 when he joined left-wing organisation Moviment Graffitti. He has participated in awareness-raising events, educational activities and direct actions aimed at challenging the political party duopoly and the power of big business in Malta. These included several campaigns for environmental protection as well as initiatives against the privatisation of public land and the economy. He was also involved in campaigns for workers’ rights, human rights and equality. André is 38 years old and holds a Master’s Degree in Anthropology.
