“The Crying Need for Indian Foster Homes”: Indigenous Women Challenge State Child Welfare Practices. The speaker is Sarah Nickel (UAlberta)
About this Event

By the 1950s, First Nations and Métis communities in the west were experiencing a dramatic increase in apprehensions and adoptions, precipitating a child welfare crisis. In this presentation, Sarah Nickel places experiences with child welfare within the context of Indigenous women’s political work to explore how women responded to various child care needs in their communities and developed flexible, local, and responsive solutions.
