Join paleontologist and scientific illustrator Joshua Ballze for this lecture about prehistoric and contemporary Indigenous astronomy.
This talk will explore the field of Astronomy and mapping the skies as we explore Indigenous Astronomy both prehistoric and contemporary. Together we will explore the influence of Indigenous People currently employed in NASA as well as their long lasting history in the Space Program and as Astronomers. We will also explore artifacts, petroglyphs, and star charts painted onto ancestral cave walls which map out the cosmos and share a few of the indigenous stories tied to the heavens.
Doors open at 6:30pm.
*The event is free, but space is limited, and registration is required to attend. The talk will be live-streamed to our YouTube Channel for those unable to attend in person.
Joshua Ballze is from the Hia-Ced O'odham and Tarahumara nations located in the Southwest and the Sonora desert. Joshua has been working in museums for years as a science communicator and museum artist. His fields are both Paleontology and Archaeology, and he has worked on exhibits and digs for a few institutions including, but not limited to: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, the La Brea Tar Pits, the Cooper Center of Paleontology, Foothill College Anthropology Department, and most recently with the NPS and Department of the Interior as a scientific illustrator recreating the Hohokam/Huhugam culture.
Rooted: The Natural History of People in the Southwest is the second installment of NHI's humanities speakers series exploring the relationship between people and place in Arizona and the broader Southwest. Explore how humans have shaped and been shaped by the landscape of our region over time in this series of talks from archaeologists, Indigenous historians, ethnobotanists, activists, and authors.
