About this Event
Jessica Walks First is a classically-trained chef, educator, and member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, bringing indigenous foods to the forefront to Chicago’s culinary scene.
Join Chef Walks First at the Sycamore Public Library for a guided discussion on Indigenous foods and stewardship of natural resources. Explore current & past Indigenous foodways, as well as the history and stories of foods that are vital to the culture of the Great Lakes Region.
Through her catering company, Ketapanen Kitchen, Chef Walks First has worked with organizations across the midwest to address issues like food access, food sovereignty, food justice, and healthy eating.“Feeding people is one way we care for our loved ones and communities. Food brings people together,” she says, “Ketapanen is an expression of Love in the Menominee language. So it seemed fitting to use it as the name of my kitchen. ‘Ketapanen Kitchen: Where Food Is Love…’".
