About this Event
Indigena Collective presents INTERTIDAL: BEYOND BINARIES, in collaboration with Artspace and Isabel Lu on Sunday, May 19th from 2–4pm at Artspace in downtown Raleigh. This reading will feature queer creatives in the community and highlight's Isabel's solo exhibition Your Ocean Is On Fire on view at Artspace May 3 - June 30.
The intertidal zone is the area of a seashore which is covered at high tide and uncovered at low tide. We are reimagining this zone as a metaphor to push past the gender binary—and to examine how queerness is a space-between that is constantly shifting: sometimes uncovered, sometimes hidden, and always ever-expanding.
This event will be free and open to the public! Please wear a mask.

More about Isabel Lu
Isabel Lu was a North Carolina Emerging Artist in Residence at Artspace in 2023. Their work explores ridiculous and consequential moments of self-exploration. By redefining Traditional Chinese Medicine theories and practices, Isabel looks at their relationship to their body and asexuality. In many of Isabel’s paintings, they enjoy the silliness and seriousness of using food as a meaningful symbol of objectification and ownership.
About Your Ocean Is On Fire
“Your Ocean is on Fire” is a collection of portraits, letters, and herbs that reflect on objectification, identity, and internal turmoil through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Neither Eastern nor Western perspectives provided me with ‘answers’, but they offered guidance to find recognition and relief while we remain unresolved.
