Road traffic injury remains the leading cause of death for childrenand young people. Each year we lose too many neighbors, including children and teens, to road violence.
In memory of those lost, we invite Indy neighbors to walk with us from Shelby St to State St along Raymond. This stretch of Raymond and those two intersections have seen too many crashes with severe injuries and fatalities in recent years. We'll be stopping to name those lost along the way.
When? - Sunday, Nov 16th, 1:00 pm
Where? - We're starting from the Safeway parking lot at Shelby and Raymond, 2176 Shelby St, Indianapolis, IN. If you're driving, park on the far west side of the parking lot, furthest from Shelby St.
What? - A memorial walk and vigil for those killed and severely injured in road crashes. We'll walk on the Raymond Street sidewalks from Shelby St to State St. Along the way, we'll stop to pay our respects to those lives lost and permanently altered by road violence - including the 4-year-old killed by a hit and run driver that ran a stoplight at State St.
Ahead of and during the walk, Central IN Cycling will give out free bike lights, helmets, and backpack reflective tags. This intersection is a busy one for people walking, biking, and getting to the bus stops. In addition to grieving those lost, we are taking this small action to increase visibility for neighbors crossing the street.
Why? - We have all be impacted in some way by dangerous roads, speeding and distracted drivers, and road crashes. The memorial walk will offer a time to collectively grieve, while highlighting what we need to do to prioritize safety and reduce fatal crashes in our city.
