Indianapolis Opera returns to The Tarkington this November, presenting Verdi’s Rigoletto with an internationally-acclaimed cast led by baritone legend Mark Rucker (Friday, Sunday) and José Luis Maldonado (Saturday) in the title role. Rucker made his debut as Rigoletto with IO in 1987, now returning to the circle city after a decades-long career that has seen him perform in the world’s greatest houses, and Maldonado has established a formidable career as an in-demand baritone on the international stage. Tenor Ganson Salmon, Indianapolis native & IO Resident Artist alum who has appeared as a leading tenor throughout the US, will make his debut as the Duke, and Soprano Brandie Inez Sutton, known for performances with companies across the country from Seattle Opera to the Met, will star as Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda. Celebrated bass Peter Volpe, whose impressive performance career spans multiple decades and four continents, stars as the assassin Sparafucile, and mezzo-soprano, Laura Zahn, also a former IO Resident Artist, will appear as his sister, Maddalena. At the artistic helm of this production are stage director Mark Freiman, known for his inventive storytelling and nuanced approach with opera companies nationwide, Maestro Alfred Savia, IO Principal Conductor and former Music Director of the Evansville Philharmonic, Dr. Cara Chowning, IO Chorus Master, and Rachel Bennett, IO Resident Pianist & Coach. Rounding out the cast are IO Resident Artists Ashley Ruckman, Luisana Rivas, Alex Gushrowski, and Ryan Henry, as well as Daniel Narducci, Ian Williams, and members of the IO Opera Chorus.
With such an incredible cast & artistic team assembled, audiences can look forward to a transcendent operatic experience—one that marries vivid storytelling, lush orchestration, and inspired stage direction with sheer vocal athleticism from some of the greatest singers in the world.
