Indiana State Sanatorium History
The "White Plague" & The Castle in the Woods In 1907, the Indiana State Sanatorium was born out of a desperate battle against Tuberculosis—the "White Plague."
Designed as a sprawling, 500-acre "city of its own," the facility was a self-sustaining fortress. It had its own coal mine, power plant, bakery, and farm—all built to isolate the sick from the world outside.
Here, the "cure" was simple but harsh: patients spent their days and nights on open-air porches in the biting Indiana air, hoping for a miracle.
For many, it was a place of recovery; for thousands of others, it was their final stop.
From Healing to Haunting As medical science conquered Tuberculosis, the facility’s purpose shifted, but its shadows only deepened.
In 1976, it reopened as a nursing home and private mental hospital. This era was marked by tragedy and controversy, clouded by lawsuits and allegations of malpractice.
