About this Event

Join Indiana Humanities on Monday, Oct. 28, at the downtown branch of the Monroe County Public Library for Farming is all in the Family! We will be discussing the history and future of Indiana's family-run farms during a special Unearthed-themed INconversation, presented by Indiana's Family of Farmers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2023 edition of America’s Farms and Ranches at a Glance estimates that in 2022, 88 percent of American farms were "small family farms and operated 46 percent of U.S. agricultural land." Small family farms are vital parts of their communities. They provide stewardship for the land, grow food to sustain their neighbors, contribute to the local economy and often play an essential role as the backbone of their local and regional food systems.

Be a part of the conversation about how family farms were essential to the early settlement of our state, and what their current challenges and future plans are.

The moderator for the evening will be Nathan Shoaf, urban agriculture state coordinator with Purdue Extension. Joining him in conversation will be Denise Greer Jamerson, Greer Family Farm and Legacy Taste of the Garden; Kyle Smith, Wilderlove Farm; and Joseph Fischer, Fischer Farms.

ABOUT INDIANA'S FAMILY OF FARMERS

This program is part of Food for Thought 2024 and presented by Indiana’s Family of Farmers, which was formed in 2009 to raise awareness that Indiana’s farmers are among the top producers of grains, produce and meats you eat every day. We believe that quality farming means quality food that is good for you, your families, and the environment. That’s our promise: Food for your family, from our family.

ABOUT UNEARTHED

Unearthed is a multiyear thematic initiative from Indiana Humanities that encourages Hoosiers to discover and discuss their relationships with the natural world. Through engaging speakers, a statewide read, exhibitions, Campfires treks, a film series, podcast and more, Hoosiers will explore how we shape the environment and how the environment shapes us. Learn more and get involved by visiting www.indianahumanities.org/unearthed.

ABOUT INDIANA HUMANITIES
