What to expect
Designing and Scaffolding Inclusive tasks:
This workshop equips participants with strategies to design inclusive tasks that accommodate diverse abilities, adjust complexity, and provide tailored support. Through collaborative exercises and feedback, participants will create scaffolded exercises that can be immediately applied in their teaching.
Sumara Fraser is the visionary behind WIDance. Since graduating from the Performing Arts School (now Unitec) in 1994, Sumara has been a prominent contemporary dance performer, tutor, and choreographer with renowned companies across Aotearoa, including Manawa Nui, Footnote Dance, and Touch Compass. As the founder of WIDance in 2010, Sumara is dedicated to advancing accessibility in the arts, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to dance.

Dancing with the Deaf Community:
Sarah Davies brings a rich background in theatre and dance, growing up in the studio and studying professionally at the New Zealand School of Dance. Her journey took a transformative turn when she discovered New Zealand Sign Language, leading her down a path of working in Deaf education and disability support. Sarah holds a degree in Educational Psychology and Linguistics, complementing her extensive experience working with and within the Deaf community. She is also a qualified yoga teacher, leading classes for the Wellington Deaf community in 2022.
Sarah’s session is all about how to design movement classes that incorporate Deaf-friendly practises and accommodations, covering both traditional dance class structures, as well as yoga and mindfulness sessions. Sarah will also delve into what it means to be ‘culturally Deaf’, sharing some insights into their vibrant communication and storytelling styles.

Dancing safely.
Building skills to support individuals with balance or movement challenges. Learn safe dance techniques using seated and supported movement that promote creativity, confidence, and self-expression.
Rachel Horwell is a seasoned dancer and qualified physiotherapist with a deep passion for dance therapy. In 2014, Rachel founded ‘Danzability,’ a dance therapy class designed to support individuals with Parkinson's Disease, stroke, cerebral palsy, arthritis, and other conditions. Her work is dedicated to enhancing movement, joy, and well-being through dance.

What is Inclusive Teaching?
Inclusive teaching creates a space where everyone, with or without a disability, has an equitable opportunity to experience dance and its myriad benefits—from nurturing creativity and developing motor skills to enabling self-expression and fostering a sense of belonging. It involves being curious about your students, understanding what motivates and inspires them, and pushing beyond current boundaries in a safe and supported environment. This approach aims to bring out the best in both students and teaching practices.
Our workshop is open to anyone interested in facilitating dance experiences. We are excited to share our knowledge and experiences with you and support the leaders of tomorrow.
