EXILE: Music of the Early Modern Jewish DiasporaEXILE features Italian, German, and eastern European music and Jewish culture during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The program highlights Jewish musicians, the non-Jewish composers they influenced, and composers who inspired innovations in Jewish composition. Music by Salamone Rossi, Johann Vierdanck, Claudio Monteverdi, the English Bassanos, and many others are performed by Incantare’s period ensemble of Baroque violins, sackbuts, and chamber organ. EXILE explores the European Jewish experience during the early modern period, breaking down preconceptions of Jewish musical culture and exploring the implications of diaspora on Jewish artistic legacy.
