Join us for Professor Liana Machado's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled "Cognition in health and disease".About Professor 's research:
Professor Liana Machado's expertise is in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at UCLA in 1994 and a PhD in neuroscience at UC Davis in 1998, followed by postdoctoral research in the laboratory of a neurologist in the UK, and then joining the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience Programme at the University of Otago in 2003. Research in Professor Machado's laboratory investigates mechanisms and machinery underlying cognitive functioning, cognitive difficulties that emerge as we age and with diseases impacting the brain, and methods to improve cognitive functioning. By working with people suffering from neurological conditions alongside neurologically-healthy adults, her laboratory has been able to combine the gained knowledge to advance our understanding of cognitive function and dysfunction, and to identify ways to optimize cognition. Professor Machado has published extensively in high-impact international journals and collaborates with overseas researchers in South America and Europe. In addition to lecturing to students on her areas of expertise over the past 22 years, she has mentored and trained countless research students, many of whom since established research careers. Throughout her career, Professor Machado has served the community through public presentations, media appearances, fundraising, and service on scientific advisory committees.
