Discovering neurodiversity: Lessons from science, education and real life


The neurodiversity paradigm has changed the way in which neurodevelopmental differences - including autism, ADHD and dyslexia - are understood, with important implications for education. In this lecture, I reflect on my experience in this evolving field, both professionally as a developmental psychologist and personally. From the developmental science of dyslexia to participatory studies with autistic children, my research seeks to inform educational practices that enable neurodivergent learners to thrive. In the university classroom, this has involved harnessing Universal Design for Learning and strengths-based assessment. I argue that neurodiversity-affirming educational practice is to the benefit of all students and, thereby, wider society.


Biography:

Lorna Hamilton is Professor of Developmental Psychology and Inclusive Education at York St John University. She is a chartered psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Lorna studied medieval languages and history at Clare College Cambridge, where she was also a choral scholar, and worked for several years as a professional musician before discovering Psychology.

Lorna’s PhD at the University of York investigated the role of the home environment in the language and reading development of children with dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD). She has subsequently worked with autistic children and young people in longitudinal research to understand their journeys through mainstream schooling, and how these educational experiences impact identity development and wellbeing. Current projects seek to apply learning from neurodivergent school pupils to the university context, with the aim of creating truly inclusive experiences on campus for neurodivergent students. Lorna’s research is funded by the Sir Halley Stewart Trust, National Institute for Health Research, and the Experimental Psychology Society.

Lorna joined York St John University in 2012 and led the subject area of Psychology as Associate Head of School from 2018 to 2024. She currently leads the Research in Neurodiversity, Environment and Wellbeing (ReNEW) group and contributes to strategic leadership of inclusive education across the university.

This event will close at 7.00pm and will be followed by a drinks reception from 7.00pm - 7.45pm for all attending.
