Professor Nigel Maxted is Co-Chair IUCN Species Survival Commission Crop Wild Relative Specialist Group; Chair of European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources In Situ Working Group; Chair of the Defra Plant Genetic Resources Committee; Senior Scientific Advisor for the Global Environmental Facility / World Bank on Plant Genetic Resource Conservation and until recently was an Honorary Research Fellow at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. He was appointed International Science Advisor for Bioversity International in 2016. He has published >250 scientific papers and 24 books on various aspects of Plant Genetic Conservation.

He has recently published a policy papers on English crop wild relative conservation for Natural England, crop wild relative in situ conservation for European Cooperative Programme for Genetic Resources and the European Parliament and global agrobiodiversity conservation and use for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, as well as engaging in practical field-based conservation in the Middle East. He has supervised over 160 Masters and 37 PhD research projects. He holds an OND in Agriculture from Hadlow College, Kent, BSc in Biological Sciences from the Polytechnic, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, MPhil and PhD in taxonomy and conservation from the University of Southampton, Hampshire.
