Inaugural "William Donald Schaefer Day" 2021

This coming November 9, 2021 will be the 50th Anniversary of former Mayor & State of Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer being elected as the 44th Mayor of Baltimore.


To honor this historic 50th Anniversary The "Charm'tastic Mile" of Baltimore the famed 1.3 mile corridor in the heart of downtown Charm City that connects Dwtn-West the Inner Harbor & Harbor East is proclaiming November 9th as the Inaugural "WDS Day" for the City of Baltimore & State of Maryland. Schaefer was Mayor from 1971-87 being re-elected in 1975 79 and 83. He was the 58th Governor from 1987-95. Schaefer was the 32nd Comptroller for the State from 1999-2007.

Schaefer spearheaded the Bicentennial Celebration of July 1976 with the Tall Ships at the Inner Harbor. His vision of Baltimore becoming a tourist attraction oversaw the opening of the 2 pavilions at Harborplace on July 2 1980. The next year saw the opening of the National Aquarium in August 1981. The Aquarium just celebrated their 40th Anniversary. In 1984 he appointed the 1st African-American Police Commissioner Bishop L. Robinson. The police headquarters building downtown is named in his honor.


The "Charm'tastic Mile" was introduced to the City Baltimore April 25, 2016 5-years after the passing of former Mayor William Donald Schaefer. The famed 1.3 mile corridor that connects Dwtn-West the Inner Harbor & Harbor East is the evolution of the vision created by Schaefer in 1975 with the coining of the Charm City nickname. William Donald Schaefer Day will be honored with the "WDS-DAY Mayoral-Election 50th Anniversary" button posters and stickers given to businesses hotels & restaurants around the city to honor his life legacy & work as a true champion for the City of Baltimore.


Residents of the City and State of Maryland are encouraged to stop by his statue on November 9 2021 located in the Inner Harbor and pay respect with cards and flowers honoring his contribution to the renaissance of Charm City.
