The Shadow of the Glenwas first produced in 1903. It was the first of Synge’s plays to be performed on stage. It is set in County Wicklow where a tramp seeking shelter in the Burkes’ isolated farmhouse finds Nora tending to the corpse of Dan her husband.
Riders to the Seawas first produced in 1904. Set on Inishmaan in the Aran Islands. Maurya has lost her husband and five sons to the sea. As the play begins the family receive word that a body which may be their brother Michael has washed up in Donegal.
