I 2015 opplevde Europa en stor flyktning- og migrantkrise med over én million mennesker som søkte tilflukt. «In the Past We Made History» er en kunstnerisk utforskning i form av et arkiv, med fokus på strategier for å huske og være vitne, som ofte utelates fra kollektiv hukommelse eller offisiell historieskriving.
Arkivet, som består av muntlig historie, fotografi og filminstallasjoner, danner et levende billedvev som fortsetter å åpne seg for forandring og transformasjon. De ulike trådene kan sees på som flere tidslinjer som bøyer fortid og nåtid.
Arkivet fletter sammen minnefragmenter fra steder som fungerte som asylsentre og nødhjelpssentre for mennesker med flyktningerfaring frem til 2018. I perioden 2022–24 har kunstnerne dokumentert arkitekturen – bygninger, rom, overflateteksturer – som formet rammeverket for de nyankomnes hverdag. Disse bildene er satt opp mot fotografier fra lokale arkiver og representerer en bredere migrasjonshistorie.
Underveis i utstillingsforløpet - i Norge, Sverige og Danmark - inviteres lokalbefolkning med migrasjonshistorier til å dele disse og inkludere i utstillingen.
Tina Enghoff er billedkunstner og fotograf utdannet ved International Center of Photography i New York. Hennes kunstneriske praksis med kamerabaserte medier er sosialt engasjerende og med fokus på det stedsspesifikke.
Kent Klich er billedkunstner og fotograf fra International Center of Photography i New York. Klich arbeider innen fotografi og film, langsom journalistikk og samarbeidende metoder for bildeproduksjon og representasjon. Han har også jobbet tverrkulturelt med kunstprosjekter i Danmark, Norge, Sverige og Palestina.
Anastasija (Nastija) Kiake er billedkunstner, forfatter og forsker med røtter i Latvia. De er basert i Haag, Nederland, og har samarbeidet med Tina Enghoff og Kent Klich i utviklingen av In the Past We Made History.

Tina Enghoff & Kent Klich: In the Past We Made History

In 2015, Europe experienced a large refugee and migrant crisis with over one million people seeking refuge. In the Past We Made History is an artistic inquiry in the form of an archive, focusing on strategies of remembering and bearing witness which are often left out of collective memory or official history writing. Consisting of oral history, photography, photogrammetry, and film installations, the archive forms a living tapestry as it continues to open itself up to change and transformation. The different threads can be seen as multiple timelines that bend the past and the present.
The archive interweaves the memory fragments of locations that functioned as refugee asylum centers and emergency aid centers for people with refugee experience until 2018. During the period from 2022-24 the artists have documented the architecture – buildings, rooms, surface textures – that shaped the framework of the newcomers’ daily lives. These images are juxtaposed with photographs from local archives and represent a broader history of migration.
Tina Enghoff is a visual artist and photographer trained at the International Center of Photography in New York. Her artistic practice with camera-based media is socially engaging and site-specific.
Kent Klich is a visual artist and photographer from the International Center of Photography in New York. Klich works in the fields of photography and film, slow journalism, and collaborative methods of image production and representation. He has also worked cross-culturally on art projects in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Palestine.
Anastasija (Nastija) Kiake is a visual artist, writer, and researcher with roots in Latvia. They are based in The Hague, NL and has collaborated with Tina Enghoff and Kent Klich in developing In the Past We Made History.
