All registrants will be requested to abide by all COVID safety protocols put in place by Oolite Arts and agree to all the terms in the waiver.
This studio course will provide hands-on instruction on the properties and versatility of the charcoal medium., Students will further develop and refine their drawing techniques, as well as gain an understanding of observational drawing for the purpose of artistic expression.
During the course, students will start learning from geometric shapes then moving to Still Life and finally a portrait drawing of master artists such as Caravaggio, Diego Velázquez, and Georges Seurat. Students will be asked to create a drawing that touches on different dimensions of these artists’ works, specifically the use of chiaroscuro (the use of contrasting values).
Outcomes:
Define language associated with materials and drawing techniques.
Understanding of value and composition.
Explore the fundamentals of light, shadow, and volume using charcoal on paper
Discuss ideas and concepts related to Caravaggio, Diego Velázquez, and Georges Seurat’s work.
Further understand the processes of artistic expression within the drawn form
Analyze and evaluate completed work.
About the Instructor
Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Matthew Forehand has based his art career out of the city of Miami. He began his art school studies at Pensacola State College where he received his Associate’s degree in Visual Arts. Matthew continued his education at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. During his time at SAIC, he enrolled in Ox-Bow School of the Arts and Artist Residency in Saugatuck, Michigan. Currently, he is teaching visual arts at Miami Arts Charter School. His courses at MAC include Foundational Elements of Art, Material Based Art, and Printmaking.
