About this Event
"GREAT...THIS RANKS WITH THE BEST!" ---Dr. Joe Berry, author of Reclaiming the Ivory Tower . Catch the 55 minute documentary generating buzz across North American campuses! The director, a filmmaker and long-time precarious contract university instructor, travels Canada to lift the curtain on higher education's dirty little secret. The search plunges viewers into the challenging lives of precarious contract faculty, their joys and struggles. We also meet permanent faculty, students, an administrator, activists and experts. We engage with artists in action, enjoy a glimpse of an outdoor biology class on the Nova Scotia shore, struggle alongside a group of Alberta sessional lecturers trying to help make their faculty association more democratic, experience the biggest higher education strike in Canadian history, and meet some international experts and activists.
The film has garnered rave reviews and has now played on 75 campuses across North America, screened at 11 international film festivals, garnered 5 awards, was the keynote event at the international COCAL 14 Conference in Mexico, and has generated much discussion. Followed by panel and Q&A on the film and the gig economy, then a short mixer. Edmonton screening sponsored by IWW Edmonton GMB, co-sponsored by AASUA, GMUFA and CUPE 3911.
