“Come Learn About Your History, Salsa Albuquerque”
It’s rich.
It’s unique.
It’s ours.
It’s important.
This community, this music, this movement has deep roots in New Mexico.
We have incredible leaders and culture-bearers right here in our own backyard. People who’ve helped shape the rhythm and soul of Salsa in Albuquerque.
Friday night’s Historic Spanish Harlem Orchestra performance, with special guest Herman Olivera, doesn’t happen without that history and the road it paved.
Join us for a lively, engaging conversation as we explore that story together. Come listen. Come share. Come celebrate.
Salsa in New Mexico: Looking back to the Roots
Join us for a conversation between Ivón Ulibarrí of Café Mocha and several other outings during her life, bassist Maud Beenhower of Casablanca and Charanga del Valle, and long-time KUNM Salsa Sabrosa host and DJ Louis Head. The three will share their experiences and roles in building the Salsa music scene in Albuquerque and beyond, from the early days of Latin music pioneers like Ulibarrí, to the establishment of a weekly live music presence at the Cooperage, to the changes that have taken place over time. This should be a lot of fun, and there will be room for audience participation.
In Rhythm Fest: A New Mexico Community Event is two unforgettable days of dance workshops led by top local and international instructors, offering 30 diverse classes in styles like Cuban Salsa (Casino & Rueda), Salsa on 1 & 2, Bachata, Zouk, Kizomba, Cha Cha Cha, Cumbia, Latin Hip Hop, Samba, and more including a special kids class!
