The Santos Vive Project invites you to a caravan for a drive thru graveside ceremony in remembrance of Santos Rodriguez. It has been 48 years since young Santos was murdered by DPD, not much has changed for brown and black communities in the City of Dallas, and across the nation. At this year's annual ceremony, we will share the story of Santos, announce exciting developments, and continue demanding that the City of Dallas highlights this tragic historical moment. We will begin by meeting at Pike Park, where Santos played as a child.
We will depart from Pike Park at 9am and arriving to Oakland Cemetery for a drive thru procession, around 10am or earlier. Here, Santos' Mother Bessie and Santos Rodriguez Rememberance Coalition will collect flowers and offerings for Santos or his mother Bessie.
Please add posters to your vehicle, and if you are able to, bring blue and white flowers.
We ask that all participants continue to follow CDC guidelines and wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash their hands repeatedly and often. We will also be going live on the Santos Vive Facebook page, EcoLatino Community Radio Page, KNON, and several other coalition members, pages as well.
The Story of Santos:
On July 24, 1973, officers dragged Santos and his brother, David, out of bed as they slept in their home, claiming they robbed a vending machine. Officer Darrell Cain murdered 12-year-old Santos Rodriguez and was only sentenced to 5 years in prison and served only half his time. 2 and a half years for stealing the life of a 12-year-old child. JUSTICE FOR SANTOS WAS NEVER SERVED.
The Santos Vive Project is a collective community effort that comes together annually to retell the story of Santos. The mission of the SVP is to create a memorial in the City of Dallas. Each year, they organize a ceremony to tell Santos' story and continue screenings of the Santos Vive documentary. Any and all donations donated are given directly to Santo's Mother, Bessie.
