Join Mrs. Collins for this in-person lab event. During this session students will discover the following topics:-Layers of the Earth
-Alfred Wegener
-Continental Drift/Plate Tectonics
-Pangaea
-Earthquakes
-Volcanoes
Students will begin the class learning about the 4 layers of the Earth-crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. Did you know that the inner core is the hottest layer of the Earth with temperatures ranging from 9,000 to 9, 300 degrees Fahrenheit? Using clay and playdoh the group will create their own personal Earth layer model showing the distinct layers. The Earth's crust has many trenches and mountains. The theory of plate tectonics explains how mountains/trenches are formed, and one great scientist is to blame-Alfred Wegener. We will learn about his incredible discoveries and visualize his ideas using a paper map puzzle exercise. There are three kinds of plate tectonic boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform plate boundaries. Students will practice using hand movements to memorize the 3 types of boundaries. Volcanoes and earthquakes cause damage to the Earth's crust all over the world. For the final lab exercise, students will be recreating volcanoes and earthquakes. For the volcano experiment students will use min cups, baking soda, food coloring, and vinegar to create personal volcanoes to erupt. Then using a box students will create their own personal seismograph, and shake the box to represent earthquake movement.
This session will be jammed pack with lots of hands-on activities to help with comprehension.
The class will be offered at the Nopone Community Center, in the arts/craft room. According to the community center guidelines, the class size will be limited to 20.
The Nopone Community Center has a range of outdoor activities for parents or siblings to try out during the class time. Outside of the center several baseball fields, outdoor walking track, and a nature trail system can be found for additional fun before or after the event (or for siblings during class time).
