About this Event

For centuries, the ocean along Rhode Island’s winding coast has been a vital source of sustenance for its residents. Both Native Americans and European settlers sought to move beyond catching individual fish to capturing entire schools. In their pursuit of more efficient methods, they developed and refined trapping technologies over time. Primitive stake traps gave way to fykes and weirs, much like those used along the rest of the New England coast. Confronted by the powerful forces of the open Atlantic, Rhode Island fishermen continued to innovate, eventually creating a unique floating trap system capable of withstanding wind and waves. At its peak, dozens of companies operated hundreds of traps in the state’s waters. Today, only two companies remain, continuing this time-honored tradition.

This presentation explores the last surviving floating trap companies, documenting a full season as they construct and fish their 1,500-foot-long traps. The photographs featured in this series earned Yankee Magazine the prestigious national award for Best Photo Essay of the Year from the City and Regional Magazine Association.
