About this Event

On the occasion of ‘María Berrío. Soliloquy of the Wounded Earth,’ the artist's debut solo presentation with Hauser & Wirth, and her first exhibition in New York since 2017, please join us for a talk with María Berrío and writer Siddhartha Mitter within the exhibition at Hauser & Wirth 22nd Street.

Combining watercolor and Japanese paper collage, María Berrío creates vivid tableaux that merge impressions drawn from myths and folktales with contemporary experiences of adversity, determination and triumph. ‘Soliloquy of the Wounded Earth’ will unveil new large-scale works on canvas that portray environments and characters that are unknown yet familiar. Imbued with a riotous spirit, Berrío’s expressive surfaces and layered pictorial architectures evoke societies in states of flux. Through her unrelenting attention to the poetic minutiae of everyday lives, Berrío continues to illuminate connections between present day realities and the expansive territories of memory, tradition and history.

This program is free; however, reservations are required.

About María Berrío

María Berrío’s practice weaves together elements of memory, magic and identity, drawing heavily on both her youth in Colombia and her experiences living and working in New York City. Growing up in Bogotá with two brothers, Berrío spent much of her childhood on a family farm just outside the city, which left an indelible mark on her creative consciousness. These early experiences, rich with nature, music and storytelling, continue to inform her art today, which is deeply rooted in her Colombian heritage, yet filtered through the lens of memory.
