In Conversation: Estevan Oriol, Guadalupe Rosales & Ingrid Schaffner

Join us and Curate LA on the occasion of their 10th Anniversary for the headline event of SATURDAY DRIVE – a daylong celebration of the yearlong exhibition ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE.’

Moderated by Curate LA founder Shelley Holcomb, this conversation between LA-based artists Estevan Oriol and Guadalupe Rosales, and curator Ingrid Schaffner will make the exhibition ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’ an engine for an expansive conversation about car culture, competition, destruction, and archives.

After the talk, join us in the courtyard for tunes by BROWNSKINHAZEL to celebrate 10 years of Curate LA and the final chapter of ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE.’

About ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’
For Jason Rhoades, the car was a vehicle of artistic pursuit, both readymade sculpture and American idol. Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles dedicates an entire gallery at its Downtown Arts District location to a yearlong exploration of Rhoades’ art via the subject of cars and car culture. ‘DRIVE,’ has unfolded over a series of thematic iterations, an ever-changing exhibition of Rhoades’ sculptures, drawings, videos and multiples—enriched by archival materials, public programs and contemporary perspectives.

About Guadalupe Rosales
Guadalupe Rosales (b.1980, Los Angeles; lives and works in Los Angeles) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator best known for her community generated archival projects, “Veteranas and Rucas” and “Map Pointz,” found on social media. Rosales received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Her solo exhibitions have been held at Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles (2021, 2018); Dallas Museum of Art (2021); Museo Universitario del Chopo, Mexico City (2020); Gordon Parks Foundation, Pleasantville (2019); and Aperture Foundation, New York (2018). Selected group exhibitions have been held at Commonwealth and Council, Mexico City (2024); Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2023); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2022); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2021); The Kitchen, New York (2019); and Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha (2017). Rosales is a recipient of United States Artists Fellowship (2020), Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship (2019), and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant (2019). Rosales has participated in residencies at Glen Wild (2022); PAOS/Museo Taller Jose Clemente, Guadalajara (2020); Main Museum, Los Angeles (2018); and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2017).

Rosales’ work is in the collections of Dallas Museum of Art; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Kadist Art Foundation; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Rosales’s work has been featured by Vogue, i-D Magazine, The New Yorker, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, ArtNews, Artsy, and Artforum, Univision and NPR.
About Estevan Oriol
Estevan Oriol began his career in the entertainment industry in the late 1980's as a club bouncer at several of Los Angeles' most popular Hip Hop clubs and infamous Hollywood hangouts. It was at these clubs that Estevan first linked up with his Soul Assassin brothers from South Gate, Cypress Hill. Eager to expand his knowledge of the business, Estevan took a job as tour manager for the rap group House of Pain in 1992.

It was in 1992 that Estevan first ventured into the clothing industry. He and Everlast, then the front man of House of Pain, began Not Guilty clothing and specialized in t-shirts and hoodies. Soon after, Estevan ventured out on his own creating the Scandalous line based on his experiences as a DJ.

In 1995 Estevan took up photography, cataloging the outrageous experiences he was having out on tour. When off tour, he began to take pictures of his homies from the neighborhood. He soon discovered that he had a gift for capturing the raw essence of street life with his photography. Estevan took the opportunity seriously and within a short time, he became one of the most sought out photographers of the Hip Hop community. His work has been featured in dozens of magazines worldwide including The Source, Details, Vibe, The Fader, and Rolling Stone.
In addition to being CEO of Joker and his full-time career as a photographer, Estevan still finds time to direct music videos for such groups as Cypress Hill, D12, Linkin Park, and Blink 182. He also has done several international videos for groups in Japan and throughout Europe. Estevan is currently working on producing and directing films. He just finished releasing two documentaries "LA Origi-nals" on Netflix and "Cypress Hill: Insane In The Brain" on Showtime. He also Released and Published Five Books which are 1979, L.A. Woman, L.A. Portraits, This Is Los Angeles, And Bosozoku. Estevan has spent the last three years collecting footage relating to the expanding relationship between the tattoo art world and the Hip Hop community. His photography showcases the talents of Mr. Cartoon and features dozens of prominent artists including Eminem, Xzibit, Outkast, Travis of Blink 182/Transplants, and members of Limp Bizkit.
About Ingrid Schaffner
Internationally admired as a curator, art critic, writer, and educator with nearly four decades of experience in the field of contemporary art, Schaffner is known for her generative and original scholarship focused on themes of archiving and collecting, photography, feminism, and alternate modernisms. Her many significant monographic and thematic exhibitions have brought attention to under-recognized artists and little-explored themes and practices in the art world. Most recently she served as Curator at the Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati in Marfa, Texas, where she oversaw a program of special exhibitions, artist residencies, publications, and new scholarship in concert with the collection established by Donald Judd of permanent installations by artists, including John Chamberlain and Roni Horn.

Schaffner was the curator of the 57th Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 2018, where she presented major installations by artists and collectives, including El Anatsui, Alex Da Corte, Zoe Leonard, Postcommodity, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. From 2000 to 2015, as Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania, she led a program that was renowned for its vision, creativity and dedication to artists. Among her many critically acclaimed ICA exhibitions is ‘Four Roads,’ the first major American museum presentation devoted to Jason Rhoades.

Schaffner’s exhibitions and publications as an independent curator and writer include ‘Deep Storage: Storing, Archiving and Collecting in Art’ (Haus der Kunst/Prestel); ‘Salvador Dalí’s Dream of Venus’ (Princeton Architectural Press); ‘Julien Levy: Portrait of an Art Gallery’ (MIT Press); ‘Gloria: Another look at feminist art of the 1970s’ (White Columns); ‘Jess: To and From the Printed Page’ (Independent Curators International) and ‘Chocolate!’ (Swiss Institute). Her contention that writing about art should be lively and engaging as well as acutely researched is the premise of her widely taught essay ‘Wall Text’ (Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative/Reaktion Books). She served for many years on the Graduate Advisory Committee of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.
About Shelley Holcomb
Shelley Holcomb is an artist, curator, writer, and active member of the Los Angeles arts community. She is co-founder and CEO of Curate LA and co-host of a monthly radio show on NTS, called Whits & Giggles. She holds a Painting BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design and has exhibited in multiple galleries and institutions across the globe.
