About this Event

Join us for an enlightning In Conversation event with Film and TV Costume Designer Jane Petrie and Professor Anita Taylor, Artist and Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. During this conversation you will hear how Costume Design is a powerful tool in the filmmaker's arsenal, creating visual connections that enhance storytelling and deepen audience engagement. In his session you will have the chance to see and touch some of Jane’s designs and will discover the magic of costume design in film and TV where every thread weaves a connection, and every detail tells a story.

Growing up in 1970’s Newport, Jane had no idea you could be a Costume Designer so she began rummaging for direction in 1982 on a general foundation course in Art and Design at Dundee College of Commerce. A few years later, somehow, Jane found her way to Wimbledon School of Art and has spent the 30 years since working in film and TV, 17 of those years as a Costume Designer.

Five years ago, Jane moved her costumes from London to Dundee where she has been building up a studio with the goal of turning her extensive collection of early clothing and costume into a creative resource which is available for students of costume in Scotland and anyone else on a creative journey who gets the same buzz she gets from handling garments embedded with character, history and stories to tell.

Prior to relocating to Dundee, Professor Anita Taylor was Executive Dean of Bath School of Art & Design (2013-19), Director of the National Art School in Sydney (2009-13), and Vice Principal of Wimbledon School of Art where she became Dean/Head of College on its merger with University of the Arts London (2004-09).
