Writer and Penn State Dickinson Law professor Gopal Balachandran appears in conversation with New England Review nonfiction editor Elizabeth Kadetsky for a reading and discussion about Gopal's essay "The Trials of Subu Vedam," which appears in the summer 2025 issue of New England Review. Wrongfully convicted of murder, Subu has worked tirelessly for the past forty years to exonerate himself. Learn more here: freesubu.org

Gopal Balachandran is a law professor, writer, and an elected member of the State College Borough Council. Appointed to the Indigent Defense Advisory Commission, he represents individuals throughout Pennsylvania on a variety of post-conviction matters and works with organizations like the Innocence Project and the Public Defender Association of Pennsylvania. Gopal has written two novels, one of which, Naraka, was a finalist for the Gival Press Novel Award in 2012.
Elizabeth Kadetsky is a widely published author whose essays have appeared in the New York Times and many other venues. Her most recent book, The Memory Eaters, is winner of the Juniper Prize in Creative Nonfiction. She is a current National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholars fellow and a Professor of English and creative writing at Penn State.
