What is improv?
Improv (short for Improvisation) is a spontaneous live performance in which the participants make up scenes, dialogue and characters on the spot (sometimes incorporating suggestions from the audience). It’s often funny but doesn’t need to be. Think of the show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” and you’ll get the gist.
I’ve never done anything like that before, how do I know I could do it?
Everybody and anybody can do Improv! If you think about it, you improvise all the time. You've had a laugh with your friends, family, colleagues, or random strangers. Our improv jams are exactly the same, but you get to make up the characters and situations and react to the unexpected in the moment.
What happens at Improv Untitled Drop-In Jams?
Our jams are very relaxed, informal and a lot of fun (yes, we are biased!). We know when you first come along you might be feeling a little anxious and apprehensive and so there is no pressure to join in on your first session, but we often find people who come along with the intention of just watching, end up joining in at some point before the end of the session. The first half an hour or so we do some Improv warm up exercises, to make sure new participants are eased into getting to know everyone and the whole group feels ready for the jam. We then go into short-form improvisation games for either 2,3 or 4 participants, with topics for the games being based on either audience suggestions or predetermined prompts from the host.
What will I get out of it?
As well as building skills at comedy performance there are so many benefits to coming along:
• A safe and fun way to express yourself
• Build your confidence
• Meet new and interesting people
• Plenty of laughing
• Increase creativity
• Improve Wellbeing and mental health
