ABOUT JAMES
James Hancox is an actor, improviser, theatre-maker and MC whose work blends theatre and comedy and has toured arts festivals around the world.
Graduating with a degree in Devised Theatre from Dartington College of Arts (UK) in 2001, he began his career as part of improv music act Abandoman - most notably performing at the London Apollo, on ‘8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown’ and as the support act for Ed Sheeran’s tour.
Returning to his theatre-making roots, he went on to create six critically-acclaimed solo shows and toured them to arts festivals around the world - combining physical theatre, clown, improvisation and his own original music. He has been described as a ‘master of physical theatre’ (Fringefeed) with ‘a lightning quick wit’ (Gutter Culture).
Since relocating to Perth in 2019, James is a regular improviser with Cluedunnit Murder Mysteries at His Majesty’s Theatre, has had roles in A Midsummer Nights Dream (Actors Workshop) and We Will Rock You (Platinum Entertainment), and most recently founded Tiny Shed Theatre Company: making bold, imaginative theatre for young people and touring it around schools and festivals.
Alongside his creative work, James has run theatre workshops for over two decades: beginning as a college lecturer in the UK, then moving into primary education, then secondary, before offering independent sessions to a wide range of students, artists and institutions. He has worked with WAAPA, Perth Youth Theatre and the Australian Institute of Theatresports and many schools in WA.
