!!IMPORTANT!!
Attention Orange County residents - Attend County Commission meeting June 22! Please schedule time off if you can and invite others you know who LIVE in Orange county.
WHAT: Orange County Commissioners will be voting on a humane pet store ordinance that would prohibit pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits.
WHEN: Tuesday June 22nd, 1:30 PM
WHERE: Orange county administration building located at 201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando, 32801
CONTACT: The Florida State Director at the Humane Society of the United States, Kate MacFall at [email protected] with any questions, concerns, or comments.
SHE is the contact

WHY: The majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from mills: intense breeding facilities where profit is prioritized over the welfare of the animals. Families who buy from pet stores are often burdened with pet health issues, extensive veterinary bills and in some cases chronic medical problems. Orange County residents will still be able to get their pets from a shelter, rescue, or responsible breeder. Currently there are 79 humane pet store ordinances around the Sunshine State.

Sample letter:
Dear Mayor and Commissioners,
As a resident of Orange County, I urge you to support an ordinance that prohibits the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in all pet stores. There is overwhelming evidence that Orange County residents would benefit from a prohibition on the sale of dogs and cats in all pet stores. The existing puppy-selling pet stores have been linked to puppy mill cruelty, duping customers into purchasing sick puppies advertised as healthy, unfair lending practices, an antibiotic-resistant disease outbreak that infected employees as well as customers, and more. I urge the county to join the close to 80 other localities in Florida by passing a prohibition on the sale of commercially-bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores to protect consumers as well as animals.
Please remain professional and polite at all times. Thank you for being a voice for the animals
