About the SessionPoverty, unemployment, and carbon emissions are global problems. What if there was a way to face these issues and bring them to zero?
Borrowing its title from Muhammad Yunus’ bestseller A World of 3 Zeros, this documentary explores the ability of social entrepreneurship to tackle these issues across the globe, discovering new ways of living together and doing business in a responsible and sustainable perspective. Zero net carbon emissions. Zero poverty. Zero unemployment.
Directors Áine Clarke and Michel Van der Veken first met with Muhammad Yunus in 2016, ten years after he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with the Grameen Bank, “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below”*. Inspired by his achievements and by his own humility, fascinated by his visionary business ideas, Áine and Michel started their own journey. This documentary is both their journal and their open letter to people and businesses all over the world.
The documentary includes the work of Dr. Bach Kim Nguyen, a scientist who is redefining the role of bees in our ecosystems. In 2012, he co-founded BeeOdiversity, a socially responsible company that designs and implements innovative strategies and systems to restore soil, air and water quality with the help of bees. Through it, he promotes bees as an essential resource for the environment and humans. He achieved a mortality rate of 5% in his bee colonies, while the average for Belgian beekeepers is 30%. The BeeOdiversity pilot project in Knokke-Heist has already been replicated in other cities in Belgium, France and Wales. 175,000 hectares are pollinated by BeeOdiversity bees each year in Belgium. Today, Dr. Kim’s assessment method and his bee management plan have been replicated in 22 countries.
Dr. Kim has been an Ashoka Fellow since 2015. In this screening, he will be present with us and will answer questions at the end of the movie.
