Immersive Tween Poetry with Kelly Gray (Grades 6th-8th)

Students will dive into the world of poetry as a way of processing the world around them while increasing their emotional and poetic literacy. By studying modern poets, students will be encouraged to flex their voices and write about their interior and exterior worlds. We will twist and turn, explore, go down rabbit holes and come up as more experienced listeners, writers, and thinkers.
Emphasis will be given on developing figurative language skills, developing unique voices, and using poetry as a tool for self-care. Students will leave with a portfolio of new work while having time to practice reading their poems aloud (sharing is not mandatory!), and making friends with other kindred spirits.
This class will be a hate-free zone, welcoming to all, queer friendly and inclusive. No previous poetry experience needed, but a love of writing is a plus!
About the Instructor: Kelly Gray is a writer and poetry teacher living nine miles and seven fence posts away from the ocean. She is the recipient of the Tusculum Review Chapbook Prize, the Neutrino Prize from Passages North, and an attendee of the Kenyon Review’s Workshop in Poetry. Recently, Gray’s writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Southern Humanities Review, Lake Effect, Storm Cellar, Rust & Moth, Permafrost, Northwest Review, and Action, Spectacle, among many other poetry reviews and journals. Her collections include Instructions for an Animal Body (Moon Tide Press) and Tiger Paw, Tiger Paw, Knife, Knife (Quarter Press, Gold Medal Winner from IPPY). Gray teaches poetry to 5th-12th grade with California Poets in the Schools during the school year. Otherwise you can find her in the woods with her family, two dogs and one peach colored cat.
