ENHANCING ACCESS WITH MATH LANGUAGE ROUTINES PART I with Illustrative Mathematics CURRICULUM

How can Math Language Routines provide enhanced access and challenge for all learners, and especially English learners? This session explores several of the eight Mathematical Language Routines (MLRs) that support the co-development and learning of mathematics and language. And, we set the stage for teachers to prepare for successful use of MLRs in their classrooms.

Intended Audience

Teachers implementing IM K–5 Math who are familiar with the problem-based lesson structure

Learning Goals

Explain how learning mathematics is a language-demanding activity for all students.

Describe how Mathematical Language Routines (MLRs):

  • foster mathematical understanding
  • promote language development
  • provide access to the problem
  • support collaborative work

Prepare for the successful use of MLRs.

Notes on registration and fees

  • MMSLN subsidizes the registration fee for all MMSLN Professional and Organizational Members to help offset the cost of Professional Learning certified by Illustrative Mathematics.
  • MMSLN has requirements for a minimum number of educators registered for each event. This event will be postponed or cancelled if that minimum number is not met. In that case, you will be notified of the cancellation, your registration fee will be reimbursed, and MMSLN will work with you to schedule alternate PL to meet your needs.
