About this Event
Building Classroom Community with Illustrative Mathematics CURRICULUM
All students, each with unique knowledge and needs, enter the mathematics
learning community as capable learners of meaningful mathematics. How do
teachers learn about and leverage their students’ understandings and
experiences in order to position and honor each student as a capable learner of
mathematics? In this session we will consider structures to build classroom
community so that students engage in each phase of the problem-based lesson
structure: taking risks, engaging in mathematical discourse, productively
struggling through problems, and participating in ways that make their ideas
visible.
Intended Audience
Teachers engaged in ongoing deep study of IM 6–12 Math who want to co-plan
and rehearse different components of the problem-based lesson structure
Learning Goals
- Identify structures and routines that build and sustain classroom
community over time. - Analyze features of structures and routines that invite students to make
their thinking visible to others. - Prepare to use structures and routines to build classroom community
with students.
Notes on registration and fees
- MMSLN subsidizes the registration fee for all MMSLN Professional and Organizational Members to help offset the cost of Professional Learning certified by Illustrative Mathematics.
- MMSLN has requirements for a minimum number of educators registered for each event. This event will be postponed or cancelled if that minimum number is not met.
