About this Event

Operatic and concert baritone Ilya Silchukou appears with opera companies and in concert halls across Europe as well as in Israel, Russia, and beyond. On Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 8:00 p.m., he will make a rare U.S. recital appearance at First Church Boston, 66 Marlborough Street. Accompanied by eminent pianist Pavel Nersessian, the concert features spirited arias and a romantic song cycle interspersed with evocative solos for piano.

The first half of the program celebrates the opera roles that Silchukou performs worldwide. Opening with Figaro’s Cavatina from the Barber of Seville, the artist follows with arias from three Mozart operas: The Magic Flute, Cosi Fan Tutte, and Don Giovanni. After a brief piano interlude, Silchukou taps some of his Romantic era roles, performing George Germont’s aria from Verdi’s La Traviata plus Count Di Luna’s aria from the composer’s Il Trovatore. The first half concludes with lush arias in French by Massenet and Offenbach.

Following intermission, the concert comes to climax with the fêted song cycle by Gustav Mahler, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer). Composed during 1884-1885, the composer unleashes waves of emotion and ultimately finds consolation in the aftermath of a love affair. Mahler composed both the text and music, and he adapted some of the themes for his subsequent First Symphony (1887-1888). The concert will conclude with selected Romances by Tchaikovsky.

Belarusian Ilya Silchukou is an internationally sought-after lyric baritone. He has appeared in operas at the Théâtre Capitôle de Toulouse, the Belarus State Opera, the Brigitta Opera Festival in Tallinn, Israeli Opera, Tel Aviv, Teatr Wielki, Warsaw, Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Opera La Monnaie (Bruxelles), Lithuanian National Opera, and Opéra National de Montpellier, among many others. In concerts, he has been featured at the Moscow Opera Bolshoi, the Musikerlebnis Openair Fest in München, and the Birgitta Festival in Tallinn, to name a few.

Eminent pianist Pavel Nersessian began touring at the age of eight. A graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, he has appeared at prestigious concert venues across the globe, performed with an international roster of top artists, serves on numerous competition juries, and has released recordings on the Bel Air Music label. He is currently Associate Professor of Piano at Boston University.
