In this experimental creative course, artist Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will guide participants in creating a wreath inspired by the Japanese principles of Ikebana*. Unlike traditional wreath-making, minimalism and experimentation are to be cultivated in this session. Playfulness and refinement are also to be encouraged.

Participants will be welcomed with a walk in Camden Art Centre’s garden and offered a hot cup of organic herbal tea to restore energy and be inspired. Once in the studio space, an introduction to Ikebana will be given, followed by the wreath-making session where each participant will create one wreath in a size of their choice, as small as 10 cm and up to 40 cm.

British-grown dried plant material and a selection of fresh foliage and berries that will last for several weeks will be provided. As materials employed in this workshop are primarily dry, participants will have the opportunity to focus and take time to create their piece without worrying that the plants may wilt. Material including fabric pieces naturally dyed by Johanna using plants from her allotment and dried foraged plants will also be offered. The final piece may hang on doors and inside the home.

*Ikebana is the Japanese art of arranging flowers, also known as Kado (the way of flowers).

Johanna has been a student at Ohara School of Ikebana, England Chapter, since 2018.

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, Strasbourg, France) is a painter, transdisciplinary artist, and cultural practitioner artist based in rural Oxfordshire (England). Her practice composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography and writing often conceals ecological messages, rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. Solo exhibitions include Dreaming of Tomorrow at Nidi Gallery in Tokyo. Books on her practice have been published by InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune and Jane & Jeremy. In 2014, Johanna founded the positive and collaborative cultural project Poetic Pastel. In 2018, the artist co-founded the publication series Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture. In 2021 she founded The Gardening Drawing Club.
