About this Event

What is iGEM?

iGEM, the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition, is an annual event open to teams of high school and college students from around the world. It's kind of a big deal, with teams working all year to design their own biological system to solve real-world problems. The BUGSS team, the Baltimore BioCrew, is a team of high school students from the Baltimore region. Their common goal is to use biology to improve the world.

What does the BioCrew do?

For the past five years, the BioCrew engineered phytoplankton to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, engineered bacteria to break down plastic that contaminates the Inner Harbor, engineered bacteria to produce a protein for fast blood clotting and wound repair, and engineered bacteria to regrow healthy gut bacteria following antibiotic use. The team works in the lab every Saturday from March through October. At the end, they have an amazing project, and they may even be able to show off their project at the The international iGEM Jamboree competition in November. The BioCrew teams have won medals every year with a gold medal in 2025!! Check out more about the Biocrew here: iGem and the Baltimore BioCrew

Why should I do it?

This is a unique and amazing experience for students to engage in hands-on science, to get excited about careers in science, and to learn how to use science for the benefit of us all. Learn advanced molecular lab techniques, math modeling, wiki creation and HTML coding, and the safety and ethical dimensions of using biology to improve our world.
