IFTF’s Ten-Year Forecast 2025: Strategy in the Age of Chaos

October 27-29, 2025 | Institute for the Future, Palo Alto

Welcome to IFTF's Sanctuary for Social Imagination.

"Today, as never before, we need a multiplicity of visions, dreams, and prophecies. We need sanctuaries for social imagination."

—Alvin Toffler, Future Shock

For decades, IFTF's annual Ten-Year Forecast has gathered leaders, innovators, and practical visionaries to see beyond the next quarter and make sense of what’s on the horizon. This year, we are drawing inspiration from Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock as we navigate this era.

Join us for this year's IFTF Ten-Year Forecast. Step through the threshold of our Sanctuary for Social Imagination, and Orient to the Future beginning with an experience hosted by Jane McGonigal.

What happens when society's operating systems—money, knowledge, climate, education, even reproduction—start to become unrecognizable?

In this Sanctuary we'll explore many provocative themes, such as:

  • Tech as New Religion: Emergence and influence of Silicon Valley's movements, such as rationalism and effective altruism
  • How Babies Will be Made: The reimagining of human reproduction and creation
  • Gamblification Economy: Rise of markets that appear and disappear like casino games
  • Public Option AI: Efforts to build artificial intelligence tools and platforms as public utilities and other common goods
  • Post-Epistemological Truth: New ways of knowing beyond traditional systems
  • Self-Determined Learning: Education by, for, and with learners
  • Hot Planet: Living in a world where the 1.5 °C threshold in global temperature rise has been crossed

We’re excited to hear from thought leaders (to name a few):

  • Author, futurist, and IFTF Distinguished Fellow
  • IFTF Emerging Media Lab Director,
  • Author, futurist, and IFTF Distinguished Fellow,
  • Author, futurist and IFTF Research Director,
  • Television and media executive,
  • American media theorist and writer,
  • Author and Professor, Stanford Graduate School of Education,

Format and Schedule:

IFTF’s Ten-Year Forecast is intimate, conversational, immersive, and experiential. You'll engage with leading thinkers, participate in AI-augmented foresight exercises, and work with peers who share your commitment to bold futures thinking to brainstorm strategies.

  • Monday evening: Welcome reception and opening provocations (7-9pm)
  • Tuesday: Full day of interactive sessions and collective imagination (10am-5pm) followed by an evening event (5:30-7pm)
  • Wednesday: Strategic frameworks and action planning (10am-2pm)

Who Should Attend:

IFTF’s Sanctuary for Social Imagination brings together change leaders, strategic thinkers, social innovators, and futures practitioners who are ready to move beyond short-term crisis thinking to envision and shape longer futures.
