A discussion on psychoanalytic practice on those at the fringes of society and within the broader context of mental health services
About this Event

Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking conference, Psychoanalysis on the Margins, where we explore the profound impact of psychoanalytic practice on those at the fringes of society and within the broader context of mental healthcare in Ireland. This event will bring together leading experts to discuss how psychoanalysis can be a transformative force for marginalized individuals and the place of psychoanalysis in the evolving landscape of mental health services.

Morning Session: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Working with Marginalized Populations

We begin the day with a compelling panel discussion who will delve into the nuances of working psychotherapeutically through a psychoanalytic lens with people who live on the margins—whether socially, economically, or emotionally.

Following the panel, there will be an interactive Q&A session, offering attendees the opportunity to engage with the speakers, ask questions, and share insights about the complexities of supporting marginalized communities through psychoanalytic work.

Lunch Break – Sandwiches and Tea/Coffee (included) - Enjoy a break to network with fellow attendees over lunch, connect with peers, and exchange ideas in a relaxed setting.

Afternoon Session: Psychoanalysis on the Margins of Mental Healthcare in Ireland

The afternoon session shifts focus to the broader context of psychoanalysis in Ireland's mental health system. Our expert panel, featuring Catherine Vanier, John O'Connor, and AN Other, will explore the current position of psychoanalysis at the margins of Irish mental healthcare and compare it to its more mainstream presence in other jurisdictions.

This important discussion will address key questions around why psychoanalysis, a widely respected discipline in many countries, remains on the periphery in Ireland and what steps can be taken to change this dynamic. A Q&A session will follow, providing attendees the chance to engage deeply with the topic and contribute to the conversation.

This is an essential event for anyone interested in the intersection of psychoanalysis and marginalized populations, as well as the future of psychoanalysis in Ireland. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of these crucial discussions and to help shape the future of psychoanalytic practice.

IFPP Forum - Tea and Coffee / Glass of wine

The day will conclude with an IFPP Forum, where all members are invited to come together to engage in a dynamic conversation about our discipline. This open forum will serve as a space for reflection, discussion, and collaboration, allowing members to share their experiences, thoughts, and visions for the future of psychoanalysis within the Irish mental health landscape.

We look forward to seeing you at Psychoanalysis on the Margins!
