Identifying Native Trees

When you’re out walking, have you ever wondered, “which tree is that?”
Do you know your alder from your elder? To many people our hedgerows and forests can look like a sea of green, but if we look closer and understand the clues trees give us, we can unlock their identity and so much more. On this one-day course, we’ll show you how to identify trees in summer by looking at leaves, developing seeds, fruits, bark and other clues. We’ll also look at the different uses that trees have, their place in the ecosystem and dive into a bit of woodland folklore. You will also take away your very own field guide British Trees: A Leaf ID Guide. This handy resource is perfect for continuing your learning and practising tree ID after the course is done.
Join James, who will be your tutor for the day. He has worked for many years in and around trees from managing the largest Community Woodland in Wales (300 acres, no less) to introducing children to the wonder of woods with his Forest School work. James has also introduced thousands of students to the subject of tree identification through his popular online programme The Complete Tree ID Course.
At lunchtime, share a hot campfire brew together at the woodland fire circle, sheltered under the canopy of native trees. You’ll learn about the restorative woodland management that is happening on site and how wildlife is returning to this special place. Your course will all be set against the beautiful backdrop of the mixed ancient woodland and parkland of the National Trust’s Chirk Castle estate with over 600 acres of nature to explore and veteran trees over 500 years old.
YOUR COURSE INCLUDES:
* Gain confidence in identifying a range of common native & naturalised tree species
* Recognise differences between similar looking species
* Learn to use leaves, fruits, seeds, bark and other seasonal signs
* Discover medicinal and edible uses for trees
* Understand how trees grow and their value to wildlife
* Receive your own Tree ID Field Guide bundle
* Get access to a discounted place on The Complete Tree ID Course
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR:
James is the Head Bushcraft Instructor at Woodland Classroom, having worked in outdoor education & conservation for over 10 years. James’ approach to teaching steers students toward fostering a deeper connection with nature through understanding the landscape around us; “Bushcraft skills are an effective way to do this as we learn how to make use of natural materials and live lightly with the land, whilst also connecting with our own ancient past by seeing the land through the eyes of our ancestors.”
HOW TO BOOK:
This course costs £45 per person and is open to adult learners aged 16 years and over.
