Then, you will learn and practice how to weave using FABSCRAP fabric! The workshop will end with communal skills and resource sharing.

Attendees will:

  • Gain a better understanding of woven versus knit fabric and identification practices for various weave types
  • Learn how to hand weave
  • Explore the art of weaving and how fabric structure impacts durability, breathability, and care

Overview:

Over three hands-on sessions, we’ll dive into the essentials of fabric identification - fiber, weave, & knit - helping you make informed choices whether you’re buying, swapping, repairing, or caring for your wardrobe. Perfect for anyone building a sustainable, thoughtful closet, collection, or brand, this series will teach you skills that last a lifetime.

  1. Fibers (January 6th) – Learn to distinguish natural, synthetic, and blended fibers and understand their unique properties.
  2. Weaving (February 3rd)
  3. Knitting (March 3rd) – Discover the beauty of knitted fabrics, their uses, and how to identify them with ease.

Whether you’re a wardrobe minimalist, a repair enthusiast, or simply curious about what makes your favorite pieces tick, this series is your key to understanding fabrics like never before. Come curious, leave inspired!

Background: Fiber is the raw material—like cotton, silk, or polyester—but the weave is the way those fibers are woven together to create fabric, and different types of weaves give fabrics their unique look and feel. For example, the smooth, tight weave of satin makes it shiny, while the crisscross pattern of twill gives denim its signature durability. There are tons of weave types out there, and they play a huge role in how fabrics behave.
