Ideas That Fly: Commercializing Aerospace IP

Aerospace is moving quickly bringing new opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs. This workshop will explore key trends in aerospace sector innovation, walk through a couple brief case studies to highlight the different types of intellectual property (IP), and close with a discussion on how IP can be effectively commercialized.

Participants will leave with practical insights to strengthen their own strategies for protecting and leveraging IP in the aerospace sector.

By the end of this workshop, you will meet the following learning objectives:

1. Name and identify the forms of IP in your business.
2. List the benefits of each type of IP protection methods.
3. List IP protection considerations that apply to aerospace companies.
4. Areas of opportunity for the aerospace industry.

1. Once you arrive at the parkade entrance, press the ticket button to pull entry tickets.
2. Keep the entry ticket safe, as you will need it for the exit.
3. Once at the event, we will provide you with a parking pass.
4. Navigate to the exit plaza of the parking lot, scan the entry ticket, and then scan the parking passes to validate. The pass will validate your parking for free with no charge.

Chris advises start-ups and entrepreneurs on launching and scaling their ideas into successful enterprises, with experience spanning Silicon Valley, Asia, the Middle East, and now Calgary. He has worked on commercializing and advising on aviation related technologies, including leading a major project to develop the automation strategy for International Airlines Group (IAG) and Heathrow Airport. Chris was part of the founding team of the UK' s Transport Systems Catapult research center. He brings a practical perspective to IP and commercialization.

Before moving to Canada, Chris advised the government and companies in Oman on diversifying the oil-and-gas economy through innovation. Earlier in his career, he was with Oxford University Innovation, delivering projects across 20+ countries. He also brings senior corporate leadership experience from Helix Technology, Kulicke & Soffa, and KLA, and has lectured widely on innovation and intellectual property.
