The Catskill Symphony Orchestra opens its 2025-26 season with an evening celebrating musical titans whose works have become the very foundation of orchestral repertoire. The concert begins with Hector Berlioz's tempestuous King Lear Overture, where the French master's revolutionary orchestration brings Shakespeare's tragic monarch to vivid musical life through dramatic brass fanfares and sweeping string passages. The evening then ventures into contemporary territory with Marc Migó's "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa," a composition that promises to add new colors to the orchestral palette while exploring themes of spiritual transcendence.
Following intermission, the concert reaches its pinnacle with Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 in D major, featuring the acclaimed pianist Philip Edward Fisher. This monumental work, which Brahms began as a young man grappling with his musical destiny, showcases both the soloist's virtuosic command and the orchestra's full dramatic power. Fisher, known for his interpretive depth and technical brilliance, will guide audiences through Brahms' emotional journey from the concerto's stormy opening through its tender slow movement to its triumphant finale.
