Murnau’s unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” is a widely acknowledged horror masterpiece, revered as one of the scariest Dracula adaptations ever filmed. The mysterious Count Orlok summons real estate agent, Thomas Hutter, to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. Upon arrival, Hutter learns that the eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house very near his own, a home Hutter shares with his beloved wife, Ellen. They seal the deal, but Orlok’s vampiric nature is soon revealed, and Hutter – fearing Ellen could be in grave danger – struggles to escape the castle. Meanwhile, Orlok’s faithful servant, Knock, prepares for his master to travel to his new residence. Max Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim and Greta Schroeder star.
This is the third installment in “Horrors of Noir” collaboration between ICFS and Union College Film Studies. It will be introduced by Ericka Nelson Mukherjee, associate professor of German studies and director of gender, sexuality and women’s studies at Union College. The final title in the series will be “Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” As with other ICFS events, expect prizes, surprises, a convenient bar and comfy couches. Not Rated. 75 minutes
