ICE WATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN (IRT) COURSE
Surface Rescue for Cold Water and Ice Incidents
Course Summary:
This one-day intensive training focuses on surface rescue for cold water and ice incidents with a primary emphasis on the safety of the rescuer. Learn essential skills for safe rescue and recovery operations in, on, and around ice and cold water.
Course Overview:
Internationally-Standardized Program: Meets/exceeds NFPA 1670 & NFPA 1006 standards.
Who Should Attend: Public safety and rescue professionals, including Law Enforcement, Fire, Rescue, and EMS Personnel.
Course Type: Classroom and practical evolutions, including surface rescue techniques and rescuer safety.

Course Day Schedule:
Time: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM (Sign-in starts at 8:30 AM)
Course Structure:
- 3 hours of classroom instruction
- 15 practical evolutions, including Primary and Secondary Rescuer roles
- Participants rotate through various rescue roles, including working with tether lines
Prerequisites:
- Physical Readiness: Must be in good physical condition and comfortable in deep water while wearing an Ice Rescue Suit or Dry Suit.
- Equipment: Participants must have exclusive use of an approved cold water/ice rescue suit (e.g. Mustang Ice Commander, Stearns Driflex, etc.). Rental suits are available.
Course Completion:
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive:
- Certificate of completion
- Insignia for the Ice Rescue Technician
- Requirements: Participation in classroom sessions, practical evaluations, and passing the final written exam.
This class is entirely MBFTE reimbursable, so you can learn, without the stress of taking away from your departments funds!
