Celebrate the opening of our Spring 2023 season with exhibitions Terence Nance: Swarm and Carolyn Lazard: Long Take.
About this Event

The Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania welcomes you to celebrate the opening of our Spring 2023 exhibition season, comprised of the exhibitions Terence Nance: Swarm and Carolyn Lazard: Long Take.

Join us at 6PM for a public reception featuring remarks from the artists and curators as well as refreshments, activities, and music in collaboration with Philly-based vendors. Registration is encouraged.

Terence Nance: Swarm is the first solo museum presentation dedicated to the artist’s genre-defying and innovative practice. The exhibition highlights the artist’s experimentation in film, video, television, sound and performance during the ten-year period spanning 2012 to 2022. The title of the exhibition, Swarm, is a tribute to the community of friends and family Nance built around him in Brooklyn in the early to mid-2000s. Each piece reflects their influence: from collaborations with his mother, Vickie Washington, and brother, Nelson Mandela Nance, to the partnerships he’s created with friends and chosen kin.

Terence Nance: Swarm was co‐organized by BlackStar and the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania.

Carolyn Lazard: Long Take marks the artist’s debut solo exhibition in Philadelphia. Thinking through accessibility as a methodology, Lazard presents this dance work sonically rather than visually. The artist considers how a performance might be communicated beyond its image and questions why visuality has been the default vehicle for aesthetic experience. This work was created with dancer and writer Jerron Herman and poet and artist Joselia Rebekah Hughes. Lazard encourages us to think about the often-unseen networks of care, labor, and friendship that make collaborative endeavors possible, whether it be the making of an artwork, an exhibition, or dinner.

Carolyn Lazard: Long Take is co-commissioned by the Walker Art Center; the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania; and Nottingham Contemporary.
