In collaboration with , taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow from the 21 Feb to 2 March, McDonald Road Library is proud to bring you a free screening of Jose and Pilar;offering an intimate glimpse into José Saramago's life and his wife, Pilar del Rio. Follow their whirlwind days of international travel, Saramago's passion for completing his masterpiece, "The Elephant's Journey," and witness how their love quietly sustains them throughout.

Filmmaker Miguel Gonçalves Mendes will be joining us for a Q&A session, BSL interpreted.

The program encompasses library displays featuring an extensive collection of the Nobel laureate novelist Saramago's books available for borrowing. This includes works related
to the documentary, such as “The Elephant's Journey” and “Blindness”.

Highly praised by the critics and the audience, the film succeeds in portraying the tenderness, the genuine integrity and the deep humanity between the controversial writer and his wife. It gathers sequences from Madrid to Helsinki to Rio de Janeiro. It includes sequences life in Lanzarote, and during trips around the world (presenting José's books, signing autographs, making speeches) as well as their simple, transient and quotidian moments during the period José writes his "The Elephant's Journey". The film was produced by Miguel Mendes' JumpCut (Portugal), Fernando Meirelles's O2 and Pedro Almodóvar's El Deseo.
