Call for Papers
The Italian American Studies celebrates its fifty-sixth year of academic inquiry into all things Italian, Italian American, and the Italian Diaspora. The conference is interdisciplinary in its perspective and methods and will focus on the Intersections/Crossroads of Place, Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Religion. The Conference Committee welcomes scholars from all disciplines, especially those interested in race, ethnicity, gender, and religion.
IASA encourages proposals in diverse formats, including round tables, debates, workshops, teaching sessions, and performances. In addition to individual paper proposals, we encourage the submission of abstracts and/or fully formed sessions. We especially encourage interdisciplinary panels and round tables that provide a structure for creating dialogue at the Intersections/Crossroads of Place, Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Religion. The conference committee will consider proposals that do not specifically address but may complement this year’s conference theme. Organized panels should feature no more than three presenters (or creative writers or artists, as the case may be), not including the chair and respondent. All presentations are limited to 15-20 minutes based on the number of people on the panel.
Proposals should include a 250-word abstract for each paper and a 75-word bio for each participant, including chairs and respondents, and for all participants in a proposed panel. Each participant’s name, affiliation, email, and preferred address should be listed. Please indicate if the presenter/panel requires AV equipment (each room has a computer, a projector, and speakers). The Conference Committee will send an email notification of acceptance for individual abstracts or proposed panels through Submittable by Sunday, May 26, 2024.
Guidelines for proposals:
All sessions will be 75 minutes, and we will ask presenters to limit their remarks to 15-20 minutes each for ample Q&A and discussion. Proposals may take one of three forms.
Individual presentation, paper, or talk
A complete panel session, round table, or workshop featuring multiple presenters (we particularly encourage thematic groupings of presenters from diverse disciplinary fields or methodological approaches; see above for more information)
Performance, reading, or screening of creative work
We welcome individual papers and completed sessions that could include:
- Italian Americans of Color and Their Place in Society
- LGBTQIA Italian Americans and Their Place in Society
- Catholicism in the Italian American Community Today
- Perceptions of Italian Americans in Big Business Today
Beyond our suggestions, we welcome abstracts concerning all aspects of Italian, Italian American, and the Italian Diaspora Studies and presentations on creative work and translation.
This year’s conference will feature Dr. Anthony Tamburri as its keynote speaker. Dr. Tamburri is the Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute (Queens College, CUNY) and Distinguished Professor of European Languages and Literatures.
All presenters, respondents, and discussants must be members in good standing of the Italian American Studies Association by September 1, 2024.
