As part of Black History Month, we're hosting a screening of the documentary, Iarsmaí, followed by a Q&A on Thursday 3rd October. Iarsmaí is a feature documentary produced by Dearcán Media, with the title coming from the Irish word meaning remainder, remnant or survivor. Following the screening, there'll be a Q&A with a member of the production team, and Hannah Crowdy, Head of Curatorial at National Museums NI, chaired by Takura Makoni.
The documentary examines the types of World Culture collections in Irish and British museums, including at the Ulster Museum. It explores how and why these collections were assembled, decolonisation work being delivered plus the future of these collections. Importantly it sets out how museums deal with difficult histories and the legacy of colonialism, especially in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests.
