Managing Tense Moments and Non-engagement in Sessions:
Tips and Tricks from RO DBT

Presentation Description:

Have you ever felt like you, as a clinician, were met with a stone wall from your client in session? Or perhaps they seem to be onboard, but no changes ever occur? Or maybe the client becomes hostile or attacking? In these moments, it is not uncommon to feel frozen or trapped. Navigating non-engagement and tense moments in session can make even the best therapists and dietitians feel de-skilled. In this talk, we will explore common nonengagement signals and draw from RO DBT theory and skills to learn and practice techniques for how to navigate these tricky moments.

Objectives:

  • Participants will learn to identify and address common client non-engagement signals in sessions.
  • Participants will learn and practice how to activate their Social Safety System (PNS-VVC) to help themselves regulate during tense moments in session.
  • Participants will learn how and when to use “heat-off” techniques, such as the use of metaphor and body language, to allow time for their client to regulate during tense moments in session.
